Unacceptable

Think of a person you hate—someone who just grates against your nerves and you simply cannot stand to be around them for any period of time. Why is that? Have they hurt you? Did they hurt a friend of yours? Do they have weird habits? Do they think or behave differently than you do? Do they have different beliefs than you do? Do they dress differently? Do they do their makeup differently? Do they seem “holier than thou?” Do they offend you? Think about the reason this person is unacceptable to you. Then look past that reason. Take it out of the equation.

Now think. Who is this person? Remember, the reason you can’t stand them is non-existent. Who are they underneath all of that? Think hard. Really hard. Think about everything you know about them, and everything you don’t know. Think about who they are now, and who they used to be. If you don’t know, take that into consideration. This person has a past. Who are you? Who did you used to be? Haven’t you changed? Haven’t your experiences and relationships shaped you into the person you are today? Weren’t theirs different? Certain things about a person’s life cannot be changed. Who are you to say that they are unacceptable?

And no matter the reason, whether they can change it or not, what gives you the right to decide what they deserve? I’m tired of seeing all of this hate and bullying going on on the internet and in reality. I don’t think you understand how much effect this has on people. You NEVER have the right to decide a person’s value. You NEVER get to make them feel unimportant or hated. We need each other. All of us. You have no idea who this person is when you aren’t watching. Your biases and prejudices have blinded you to who this person really is. These souls that are walking around us… they aren’t objects in your life. They are just like you. Treating them as anything less is unacceptable and I will not stand for it.

We all want acceptance. I see hundreds of thousands of people complaining about being judged and how no one understands them. No one cares. No one sees what happens when we’re alone. We expect people to love us for who we are, and then we go around hating those around us, as if they were less important, or less human than we are. They aren’t entitled to mistakes and beliefs and opinions of their own. Really? What kind of an attitude is that? Grow up, people.

Accept the unacceptable. Love them. It’s all we can do.
