95% of the time I am venting, not looking for advice.

An appropriate response? “Damn, that sucks.”
A response that will irritate me to no end? “Chin up,” “Things will get better,” “You’ll get through it,” “Everything happens for a reason,” etc. Ugh, these responses are so generic and dismissive!

Relate to me, don’t try to cheer me up, because I’m fine…I’m just venting. And if you throw a cliche phrase at me, I am mentally checking you off the list of people I would ever go to talk to.
